Rinse the cotton towel used earlier under water to clean it, then wring it out so it's damp but not soaking wet. Lay it flat on the baking sheet. Now, plug in the iron and fill its water reservoir. Set the iron to its highest heat setting and allow it to fully heat up. Once hot, press the iron down onto the damp towel and move it back and forth, as if ironing. Use the steam burst function repeatedly to force steam through the soleplate holes, which helps to dislodge any remaining debris from the vents and further clean the surface. Continue this process until you see no more grime coming off onto the towel and steam flows freely from the holes. **WARNING:** As mentioned previously, only perform this hot ironing method on stainless steel soleplates. Do NOT do this on irons with non-stick or Teflon coatings, as the heat and friction can damage the coating.

FAQs

What type of iron is recommended for beginners, and why is steam important?

A steam iron like the Sunbeam 1200W Classic Steam Iron is ideal for beginners. Steam helps relax fabric fibers, making wrinkles easier to remove and providing a smoother finish. The 'Shot of Steam' feature is also great for tackling stubborn creases effectively.

What kind of water should I use in my steam iron to prevent damage?

Always use distilled water, or 'distillate,' in your steam iron. Tap water contains minerals that can build up inside the iron over time, potentially clogging steam vents and leaving stains on your clothes. Using distilled water prolongs the life of your iron and ensures clean steam output.

How can I avoid scorching or damaging my clothes while ironing?

To prevent scorching, always check the care label on your garment for the recommended iron temperature setting. Start with lower heat for delicate fabrics like silk and gradually increase for sturdier materials like cotton or linen. Keep the iron moving continuously and avoid leaving it stationary on any one spot for too long.

Is ironing a difficult skill to learn, and how long does it typically take?

Ironing is considered a beginner-friendly skill that improves significantly with practice. While the estimated time for a full load might initially be around 60 minutes, you'll likely speed up as you become more comfortable with different garment types and techniques. Starting with simpler items like t-shirts helps build confidence.

to try one more thing i'm going to rinse out this cloth and just make it damp and i'm going to lay this down as flat as i can i am putting it on top of that cookie sheet now i'm going to heat up my iron to the highest setting and i'm going to add some water so i can steam clean those holes it's all heated up i'm going to just rub it along the bottom of this wet cloth now i would not recommend this if you have a coating like a teflon coating on your iron because it could take the teflon off but since mine's only stainless steel i can do it and just rub it rub it along the edges so i can get those edges cleaned i'm not going to burn my hands because that cookie sheet is going to take all that extra heat give it a good scrub on all of its sides i want to clean that steam and clean that spray out and i'm pretty happy with the results
